What may be normal on Day 2

Every child's recovery is a little different. Here's what commonly occurs around Day 2 โ€” and what to watch for.

  • โœ“
    Pain with swallowing
  • โœ“
    Low appetite
  • โœ“
    Low energy
  • โœ“
    Moodiness
  • โœ“
Wanting only cool or soft drinks and foods
  • โš
    Drinking less than usual

What to do on Day 2

Focus on these things today. Small, consistent actions make the biggest difference in tonsillectomy recovery.

  • โ†’
Keep pushing fluids โ€” small sips still count
  • โ†’
Soft or cool foods only if your child wants them
  • โ†’
Set alarms for pain medication โ€” stay ahead of pain
  • โ†’
Let them sleep as much as they need to

Still very sore today โ€” that's completely expected. ๐Ÿ’š

Keep the pain medication on schedule, don't wait until they're crying to give it. You're not overmedicating โ€” you're staying ahead of the pain. That's exactly right.

What to look forward to

Frequently asked questions โ€” Day 2

Aim for at least 4โ€“6 oz of fluids per hour while awake. Cold fluids are most comfortable. If your child hasn't urinated in 6โ€“8 hours, that's a dehydration warning sign โ€” contact your surgeon.

Yes โ€” white or grayish patches in the back of the throat are normal healing tissue. This is not infection. Bad breath also develops as part of this process โ€” also completely normal. Mention any concerns to your surgeon at follow-up.

Not eating is normal and expected. Fluids are the priority right now. As long as your child is drinking and producing urine, they're okay. Contact your surgeon if no fluids are going down for 4+ hours.

Set an alarm and give pain medication overnight โ€” don't let it wear off while your child sleeps. Follow your surgeon's dosing instructions exactly and don't let the schedule slip.

Yes โ€” throat swelling causes snoring and mouth breathing that can be louder than usual. This is expected during recovery. Contact your surgeon if your child shows signs of struggling to breathe.

Call for: any bright red bleeding, repeated vomiting preventing fluid intake, refusal of all fluids for 4+ hours, signs of dehydration, or breathing that seems labored. When in doubt, call.

โš  Call your doctor if you notice:

!
Bright red bleeding
!
Very little drinking
!
No urine for a long stretch or clear signs of dehydration
!
Trouble breathing

When in doubt, call your surgeon's office. No question is too small during recovery. This page provides general educational information only and does not constitute medical advice.
